- Abstract
- Presents, for the first time in Europe, the development of painting in Uzbekistan from the late 19th century to the mid-1930s, before the imposition of Socialist Realism. Examines the interaction between European avant-garde trends — filtered through Russian artistic circles — and Islamic artistic culture and the Uzbek tradition of ornamentalism. Features 175 works from the Savitsky State Museum of Arts of Karakalpakstan in Nukus and the State Museum of Arts of Uzbekistan in Tashkent. Artists include Alexander Volkov, Nikolai Karakhan, Nadezhda Kashina, and Ural Tansykbaev.
