Abstract
Catalog for the Central Asian Pavilion at the 55th Venice Biennale (Palazzo Malipiero, June 1–November 24, 2013), curated by Ayatgali Tuleubek and Tiago Bom in collaboration with Susanne M. Winterling, commissioned by Hivos with the Oslo National Academy of the Arts as co-commissioner. Anchored in a poem by 19th-century Kazakh poet Abay Qunanbaiuli, whose image of winter as social stagnation and political unfreedom structures the publication. Features artists from Kazakhstan (Kamilla Kurmanbekova, Erlan Tuyakov, Ikuru Kuwajima), Kyrgyzstan (Aza Shade), Tajikistan (Anton Rodin, Sergey Chutkov), and Uzbekistan (Vyacheslav Akhunov, Saodat Ismailova), alongside essays by Viktor Misiano, Ekaterina Degot, and others.
